What does staying connected cost over 15 years?
The grid's running costs are published. From 1 July 2025, the Synergy residential tariff charges $1.1605 per day in supply charges plus 32.3719 cents per kWh, and Horizon Power's regional A2 tariff matches both figures under WA's Uniform Tariff Policy: wa.gov.au(opens in a new tab). The Clean Energy Regulator drew the line for you. When is off-grid the wrong choice?
Three situations flip the answer, and we say this as a company that sells off-grid systems. First, high and inflexible loads. A household running reverse-cycle air conditioning, a large bore pump, an EV charger and electric hot water needs a big bank to cover all of it, and off-grid economics get worse with every luxury load you refuse to manage.
Second, a short cheap connection.
