What does diesel cost per litre in WA right now?
Diesel across Western Australia averaged about 252 cents per litre in early September 2026, with the cheapest reported stations near 229 c/L. Regional towns pay more: Albany averaged about $2.46/L while Broome and Carnarvon sat closer to $2.62 to $2.68/L. If you cart fuel to a remote block, add cartage and your own time on top of the bowser price. For the worked examples in this guide we use $2.50 per litre, which sits close to the state average. If you buy in bulk drums or run a farm card account, your landed price may be 10 to 30 cents lower. If you are in the Kimberley or on an island, it can be 40 cents or more higher.
Diesel price matters more than genset brand when you are estimating running costs. A 10% move in the fuel price moves your entire cost per kWh by the same 10%, no matter what you bought.
How many litres per hour does a generator burn?
Manufacturers publish fuel consumption at set load points, and the honest answer is a range, not a number. Two rules fall out of those sheets. First, consumption roughly tracks load: a genset loafing at 25% burns little fuel but delivers poor litres-per-kWh efficiency. Second, diesel engines prefer working at 60% load or more; running a big genset to charge a few phone batteries wastes fuel and glazes bores over time.
For budgeting, use the 75% load figure for your genset class and treat anything better as a bonus. The ranges in our cost table above come straight from those published specs, not from marketing brochures.
What is the cost per kWh from a diesel generator?
Cost per kWh is the number that lets you compare a generator against grid power or against solar and battery. A litre of diesel holds about 9.8 kWh of thermal energy, and a small genset converts roughly a quarter to a third of that into electricity. That means one litre yields about 2.5 to 3.3 kWh of usable power when the engine is working at a reasonable load. At $2.50 per litre, you are paying roughly $0.75 to $1.00 for every kWh the genset delivers.
Put that next to the alternatives. Synergy or Horizon grid power costs a fraction of that per kWh. A solar and battery system, once installed, delivers daytime energy at close to zero marginal cost and overnight energy from storage. The generator's job is to be expensive per kWh but reliable on demand, which is exactly why it belongs as a backup rather than a primary source.
Watch the light-load trap. A genset idling along at 20% load to run a fridge can burn a litre for barely 1.5 kWh of output, pushing real cost per kWh past $1.60. Sizing the genset to the load matters as much as the fuel price.
How many hours a day do off-grid households run a generator?
Community-posted figures from Australian off-grid forums cluster into three bands. On a well-sized system in a normal winter, genset use averages under an hour a day, and some owners report running it only a handful of times a year. Plan your fuel budget around the worst week, not the average. If you store fuel on site, the recovery-day run of 4 to 6 hours is the case your tank and your chargers need to handle.
Worked example: weekender running a 5 kVA genset
Take a bush block near Toodyay with a small fridge, lights, a laptop, and a water pump. The owner runs a 5 kVA genset at about 1.3 L/h (the Eniquest Husky rating(opens in a new tab) for 3 hours most weekends and for 5 hours on recovery days after cloudy weather. At $2.50 per litre: $3.25 per hour, about $10 per occupied day, roughly $40 to $50 across a long weekend including a recovery run.
